Tips for the Traveler
  Visas : Visitors staying less than 3 months and not planning to work do not require visas
  Health risks: All the major cities, and most smaller towns, have excellent health care facilities. Before you leave on your trip, make sure that your health insurance covers you while you're abroad, as doctor visits and hospitalization are expensive.
  Time: Germany is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich mean time (GMT), or 1 hour ahead of London, 6 hours ahead of New York and Montreal, 6 hours behind Hong Kong, and 8 hours behind Sydney. Germany observes daylight saving time from late March to late September, during which time it is 2 hours ahead of GMT.
  Electricity: 220 volts, 50 cycles. Bring an adapter plug for use in electrical outlets, and a transformer to operate such small appliances as hair dryers and razors
  Weights & Measures:  The metric system is standard throughout the country.
  Tourism: Germany's beautiful scenery and varied culture attract many tourists, both foreign and domestic. Tourists tend to favor the resorts of the North and Baltic seas, the Alps, the forests of the southern uplands, and the valleys of the Rhine, Main, Mosel, Neckar, upper Elbe, and Danube rivers.

  People:  German is spoken by most of the country's citizens, though several regional dialects exist. Almost 36 percent of Germans are Protestant, the great majority of whom are Lutheran, while some 35 percent are Catholic, and 2 percent are Muslim. There are approximately 30,000 Jews living in Germany today.
  Language: The principal and official language of Germany is German, an Indo-European language.
  Religion: Religion in Germany plays a fairly small role in society. Church attendance in Germany is much lower than that in the United States. Under German law, all churches are supported by a modest church tax that is collected by the state.
  Government: The Federal Republic of Germany is described as a democratic and social federal state.

  Climate Germany has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters. The warmest time of the year is from May to September. The average temperature in July, for instance, varies from 16° to 20° C (61° to 68° F) according to location. In January, the variation is from -1° to 6° C (21° to 34° F). There is no specific rainy season.
