Tips
for the Traveler |
| |
Visas : |
A valid passport and a
return or onward ticket are required for stays of up to
three months. |
| |
Health
risks: |
Japan is a low-hazard
destination. Shots for cholera are required for entry
only for those coming from an infected area. Pack a
medical kit that includes painkillers and anti-diarrhea drugs as well as antiseptic and a laxative. |
| |
Time: |
Japan is 9 hours ahead of
Greenwich mean time (GMT), or 8 hours ahead of Munich and
Paris, 14 hours ahead of New York and Montreal, 13 hours
ahead of Buenos Aires, 11 hours ahead of Cairo, and 1
hour behind Sydney. |
| |
Electricity: |
Current is 100 volts AC, 60
Hz in the west (Osaka), and 100 volts AC, 50 Hz in
eastern Japan and Tokyo. Plugs are the flat, two-pin
style. Visitors from abroad who wish to operate personal
small electronic items should bring a plug adapter and a
transformer. |
| |
Weights
& Measures: |
The metric system is
standard throughout the country. |
| |
Tourism: |
Japan's four islands offer
something for everyone: pristine alpine vistas and
subtropical coral reefs, temples, shrines, excavations,
historical sites, unique and isolated cultures, small-town
charm, and the mixed blessing of large, ultramodern
cities. |

Tipping
is not a common practice in Japan. Appreciation is most
often expressed with gifts; if the gift happens to be
money, it should be presented in a small envelope. |
